Animal bedding fire quickly extinguished

Updated: Jan 30, 2023

We would like to thank the crews from South Wales Fire & Rescue Service who attended a fire at one of our biomass drying floors this morning.

The fire started at around 8am today (Saturday 29 October) in a biomass-heated drying floor that is used to dry animal bedding. The affected building is standalone, and some distance from the main Materials Reclamation Facility (MRF), which is unaffected by the incident.

The fire is now out (12.30pm), and the clean up is underway. Water used in fighting the fire has been captured in our surface-water collection tanks and has not entered the environment.

We understand that water discolouration in the area reported to Welsh Water is caused by the disturbance of sediment in the mains water system when the fire service uses fire hydrants. Any discolouration will pass very quickly now that the fire engines have disconnected from the hydrant system.

We apologise to our neighbours for any inconvenience caused by the resulting smoke, and the commotion of emergency services arriving and working on site.

Nobody was hurt in the fire, but the building has suffered damage to the roof-mounted photo-voltaic solar panels and some of the walls. The main steel and concrete structure appears unaffected but will be checked by engineers.

Recycling reception and sorting; food waste processing; AD power generation; and quarrying operations are unaffected by the temporary closure of the animal-bedding drying floor. Milking and normal farming operations are also unaffected.

We apologise to our neighbours for any inconvenience caused by the resulting smoke, and the commotion of emergency services arriving and working on site.
