Bryn Group has installed a life-saving automated defibrillator at its recycling centre at Gelliargwellt Uchaf Farm, and registered the device on the official database so that 999 callers can be directed there in an emergency.
The company, which sorts and processes non-hazardous recycling, food and green waste from local communities and business across South Wales, has also sponsored the installation of another defibrillator in nearby Penybryn.
Alun Price, co-owner and managing director of Bryn Group, said: “We are pleased to be funding defibrillators here on the farm and in neighbouring villages as part of our commitment to local communities, and the wellbeing of those working and living at the farm."
While protecting the entire 100-strong workforce at Bryn Group, the defibrillator has particular importance for two people at Gelliargwellt Uchaf, because they have a family history of heart failure. Alun’s son-in-law, Aled Wynne, who lives at the farmhouse, and Bryn Power plant operator, John Grist both agree that having the new defibrillator on-site is “reassuring”.
John said: “The men in my family have a bad history with heart disease and cardiac arrest, so I find it reassuring to know there is a defibrillator so close to where I work and that our qualified first-aid staff have also been trained how to use it to save my life.”
The defibrillators are designed to be easy to use by anybody by playing spoken instructions to guide the user through the process. Another key safety feature is that they will only deliver a life-saving shock if the device detects that the patient’s heart is in cardiac arrest.

Family-members who live at the farmhouse and several recycling centre staff have received training in using the defibrillators, and also how to perform CPR. Aled said: “The chances of somebody surviving a cardiac arrest are greatly increased by CPR and the use of a defibrillator.”
Bryn Group directly funded the defibrillator at the recycling centre. It is now working to raise additional funds so that more defibrillators can be installed in local communities.
