Pumpkin waste is not such a treat for wildlife

Updated: Nov 6

Pumpkins are great for composting or putting through our anaerobic digester to make electricity, but please don’t put them out in your garden or leave them in the countryside for small animals.

While some pumpkin is a nice treat for hedgehogs and squirrels now and then, too much is bad for them because it gives them an upset stomach and contains too much sugar.

Please put your used pumpkin out for collection with the food waste, and we’ll turn it into electricity and biofertiliser.

More than 35 million pumpkins are carved for Halloween in the UK each year, with only a fraction of the flesh used for cooking.

On the plus side, the tens of thousands of tonnes of food waste generated can be turned into electricity and biofertiliser.

1kg of pumpkin creates enough biogas in our anaerobic digester to generate electricity to boil 18 kettles.

Still, shame not to have a slice of pumpkin cake with your cuppa.
